A s the number of girls giving birth before marriage increases primary school girls inclusive, some parents have resorted to chasing their own daughters away from home to avoid shame.
Mrs. Jeanne Nyirakamana, a member of Huye district advisory council raised this concern while talking to the women representatives from all sectors of the district.
“We are doing injustice to our own children. If your daughter accidentally becomes pregnant, the school expels her and her mother chases her away from home, where will she live or take care of the baby she will deliver?” narrates Nyirakamana.
This result into many babies being abandoned by their mothers, who most of the times resort to prostitution, she adds
Nyirakamana advises mothers not to encourage their daughters into prostitution saying “when girls are expelled from home, they make a group of like five and rent a house. What do they survive on or get rent money from if not in commercial sex?”
The biggest number of these girls drops out of school and resort to prostitution at a tender age which is a big challenge to the Rwandan society.
