Dancille Mukakamari says women are making an incredible improvement in conserving environment

Rwandan women have taken a marvelous step in development sector, Dancille Mukakamari; representative of African Gender Forum, Family Promotion and Environment Conservation has remarked.

This achievement is accredited to the political system of Rwanda that allows women to participate in decision making, she highlights.

Mukakamari explains that women are joining cooperatives, credit and saving schemes and other activities that aim at social and economic development of their homes together with men.

“Hearing women at different leadership levels testify about their journey to where they are now delights me. It’s really amazing,” she stresses.

On environmental protection, Mukakamari asserts that women are abit behind since they embraced this programme late. However, as a coordinator of ARECO, Dancille Mukakamari says that ARECO- Rwandanziza aims at empowering women to protect the environment and develop.

This has been achieved through training women in areas surrounding Ibirunga Park and in Gishwati where the “model forest” is set to be created.

In partnership with ARECO-Rwandanziza, women are being trained on increasing bamboo trees that fight soil erosion and to make different useful items out of bamboo trees, Mukakamari stresses.

In general, women have benefited from bamboo trees. They make seedbeds, use one part to prevent soil erosion and sell another half at Rwf1000 each seedling in addition to making different items and sell them, she explains.

Baskets, decorative pieces of art and other items that are loved by the people are made out of bamboo trees.

Dancille notes that women have achieved social development through a lot of money they make by selling seedlings.

She urges other women to be part of this program and develop socially and economically.
