In the period when the government of Rwanda is encouraging every Rwandan to support technical education, women have taken a step to learn technical skills as a way to develop in a quick and easy ways.
Women who have taken a step to disregard the cultural expectations of women and learnt technical skills say technical skills is the quickest way to development and changing the retarded thinking that women are not capable.
For Joselyne Kayitesi a resident of Murama cell says deciding to learn technical skills as a woman was at first a limitation but now that she decided to do so, she has a business worth Rwf7million thanks to tailoring lessons she took.
“After deciding to go back to school and complete tailoring course, I opened a tailoring atelier with Rwf150.000 but it has grown and I am expecting about Rwf7 million in a few years.”
Women who went back to school to attain technical courses especially tailoring in New Dynamic Arts Business Center (NDABUC) that is in Kibungo town say life was difficult after dropping out of school and getting married till they came back to gain some technical skills.
“After dropping out of school things got complicated with poverty and lack of what to do and I decided to get married but it was the same cycle with poverty. I decided to attain a technical skill but now I can provide for my family, dress myself with my tailoring studio” said one of these women.
Women in Ngoma district who gave testimonies during the celebrations of the International Women’s Day on the 8th. March said they are now happier that they no longer ask for everything from their husbands and their families are in harmony. They work together with their husbands towards the common goal of developing their families.
Skills that were never done by women are now best done by them. Among the many examples of such skills include the association of women fishers in Nasho who fish and technically equip their boat with engine.
