Education Minister Vincent Biruta has urged women to join the evening community socializing that is traditionally dominated by the men-folk, saying that women also have constructive ideas and opinions to put forth.
While in Cyera sector, Burera District earlier this week to mark International Women’s Day, Minister Biruta told a sizable gathering that traditionally, men would join their counterparts in the evening – usually in bars – to socialize and debate various issues while women stayed home and cooked, but that this trend needs to change since women too have something to bring to the table.
Biruta stressed that the family does not belong to one or the other (man or woman), it belongs to both and therefore both parents should have equal stake and say in matters affecting the family and community at large.
He stressed that women should be given due recognition as a valuable piece to the puzzle when it comes to development of the family and the country as a whole.
The Education Minister also pointed out that women have been empowered in Rwanda due to the government’s deliberate and concerted efforts; however this should not be taken for granted since there are other countries in the world where women are still largely marginalized.
